Numbers and classes of houses inhabited in County Leitrim
From 1841-1851, as a result of the Famine and consequent death and emigration, the number of inhabited houses fell by over 20%. But the biggest fall by far was in the number of Class 4 houses - the homes of the poorest labourers. They fell by nearly 75%.

Class 1: Homes of large farmers, estate msanagers, and professional classes
Class 2: Good farm houses or town houses, maybe over two stories
Class 3: Thatched cottages; two to four rooms with windows
Class 4: One-roomed mud cabins about 12 foot square, often windowless
